Overview

The Solaris Republic (太阳星共和 - Tàiyángxīng Gònghé) is a meritocratic stratocracy that emerged from Chinese and American military diaspora fleeing Earth's Green catastrophe, now controlling most of the Sol system and several nearby stars. Founded on principles of discipline, order, and merit, the Republic grants citizenship and voting rights only to those who serve in its military, creating a society where martial values permeate all aspects of life.

Origins & History

The collapse of biological and political to the Green triggered a desperate exodus that saw military forces from China and America abandoning their allegiances to preserve humanity's future. High-ranking officers, soldiers, and aligned scientists from the Chinese People's Republic, United States of America, East Asian Alliance of Democratic Nations, and British Commonwealth united under the leadership of the Solaris Military Commission—a council of generals and scientists led by a selected High Marshal.

As Earth's governments crumbled, this military coalition established control over nascent colonies on Luna and Mars, providing desperately needed stability during humanity's darkest hour. In 2193, with Earth sealed behind an impenetrable veil of Green spores and a field of growing debris from lost refugee ships, the Republic formally declared independence, establishing authority over the estimated 34 million survivors who had escaped Earth.

The Republic's formative years were defined by harsh pragmatism and military discipline necessary for survival in space. While initially focused on consolidating power and building the infrastructure necessary to support humanity within the Sol system, recent decades have seen the Republic expand its reach to nearby star systems, seeking to establish its martial legacy beyond humanity's birthplace.

"We did not abandon Earth; Earth abandoned us. Now we forge our future—one of discipline, honor, and collective strength, in the dust of Luna, Mars, Titan and beyond. The Republic rises not from the ashes of old nations, but from humanity's unyielding will to survive."

-High Marshal Yue Wei Zhang, Declaration of the Solaris Republic, 2193

Society & Culture

Republic society is characterized by its disciplined structure and martial values that permeate daily life. While diverse in its demographic makeup—reflecting the varied backgrounds of Earth's diaspora—the population shares a unified national identity forged through military service and common struggle.

The concept of "Fuwu" (服务, Service) represents the highest honour in Republic society, granting full citizenship and voting rights. Those who do not serve, while still respected as civilians, have limited political influence and are ineligible for leadership positions. This creates a two-tiered society where veterans hold privileged status, though the system theoretically allows anyone physically capable to earn full citizenship through service.

Republic culture emphasizes "Róngyù" (荣誉, Honor) as paramount, adapting historical military traditions to the context of interstellar defense. Personal honour is intrinsically tied to service, with the greatest accolades reserved for those who demonstrate integrity, bravery, and significant contributions to the Republic's security and prosperity.

Republic education begins with mandatory schooling that emphasizes discipline, physical fitness, and civic duty, with military training integrated into the curriculum from an early age. Exceptional students may qualify for the prestigious "Path of Enlightenment" (启蒙之路 - Qǐméng Zhī Lù)—an extended higher education system that produces the Republic's intellectual elite, valued for their critical thinking, innovation, and holistic understanding of service.

Republic culture places the focus on civic duty and service to the Republic first and religious devotion a distant second; practiced religions are not shunned but they are considered private matters. The exception to this is Assembly religious doctrines which are outlawed in the Republic.

Notable Cultural Elements

  • Legacy Gardens: Luna's underground cities house verdant ecosystems tended by thousands of specialists and robots, preserving Earth's ecological legacy
  • Merit Examinations: Comprehensive testing systems that determine military advancement and governmental eligibility
  • Marshal-Errants: Respected independent officers tasked with investigating corruption and maintaining discipline within military ranks
  • Honor Ceremonies: Elaborate public rituals that recognize exceptional service and sacrifice for the Republic

Governance & Power Structure

The Republic operates as a "meritocratic stratocracy" where military service is prerequisite for leadership and citizenship rights. At its apex stands the High Marshal, elected from and by the Military Commission to serve as the Republic's executive leader. The Military Commission (军事委员会 - Jùnshì Wěiyuánhuì) functions as both advisory council and governing body, comprising high-ranking officers representing various military branches and colonial interests.

Military advancement and eligibility for government positions are determined through rigorous examinations designed to test competency and leadership capability. This system theoretically ensures that only the most qualified individuals ascend to positions of power, though in practice, political connections, factional allegiances, and nepotism often influence outcomes.

The Republic's judicial system enforces laws derived from military codes and civilian statutes, with military courts holding jurisdiction over service members and civilian courts handling non-military cases. Despite this separation, military principles of order and discipline inform all legal proceedings.

Unlike traditional democracies, the Republic lacks formal political parties. Instead, leadership and influence are determined by rank, service record, and merit. Various subfactions exist within the military structure, typically aligned with specific service branches or colonial interests, creating a complex web of alliances and rivalries that shape policy decisions.

Military & Security

The military forms the backbone of the Republic, highly structured and accorded supreme respect throughout society. It is divided into specialized branches, each with distinct responsibilities and cultural identities:

Fleet Command (Crane Service) manages the Republic's formidable space fleet, aerospace corps, and terrestrial/aquatic forces. As the primary defensive arm, it commands the largest share of resources and personnel.

The Planetary Defense and Engineering Force (Lion Service) safeguards critical infrastructure and maintains passive defenses across Republic territory, including the increasingly vital domain of cybersecurity.

The Stellar Mapping Force (Eagle Service) operates the Republic's pathfinder vessels and probe networks, maintaining astrographic maps essential for navigation and expansion.

The elite Rapid Response and Cavalry Force (Tiger Service) handles special operations and the prestigious military Frame corps. Though nominally subordinate to Fleet Command, Tiger Service pilots and commanders wield considerable cultural and political influence.

Beyond these public branches, the Republic maintains clandestine operations through Axiom (Fox Service) and the highly classified Geist assassination unit, whose operatives undergo extensive cybernetic and genetic modification.

Signature Forces

  • Shen Wu Frame Squadrons: Elite pilots operating advanced military frames, representing the pinnacle of Republic martial prowess
  • First Fleet: The Republic's main space force, featuring heavily armed and armored vessels optimized for prolonged engagements and able to trace its lineage back to the first human space fleet
  • Axiomat aka Agents: Clandestine operatives tasked with countering forces such as Nemesis, Citadel, and corporate PMCs wetworks teams.
  • Geist (plural Geister): Heavily augmented assassins whose existence is officially denied, deployed for the most sensitive elimination missions.

Economic Model

The Republic's economy centres on defense industries, technological development, and space resource extraction. Massive investments in military infrastructure and research have made the Republic a formidable technological power, though it increasingly depends on trade with other factions for resources unavailable within its territory.

Despite its military-centered economy, the Republic faces significant challenges from corporate influence. Major corporations have deeply embedded themselves within the Republic's supply chains and defense industries, creating dependencies that often undermine sovereignty. This has led to widespread corruption in contract allocations and resource distribution, despite the efforts of anti-corruption units like the underfunded "Jiandu Baowei" (监督保卫, Guardians of Integrity).

The tension between military control and corporate influence has created an economic system where official policies emphasizing collective prosperity often conflict with realities of resource distribution favoring well-connected officers and corporate partners.

Technology & Innovation

Republic technology reflects its military priorities, with significant advancements in defensive systems, propulsion, and combat frames. While not as diversified as some factions in civilian applications, the Republic maintains technological superiority in areas directly relevant to security and space dominance.

The Republic's approach to artificial intelligence remains cautious, with strict regulations limiting AI autonomy and capabilities. Free Artilects are outlawed, with artificial intelligences permitted only in specific, highly regulated roles under constant human oversight—a policy stemming from deep-rooted fears of rebellion or loss of human control.

Biotechnology has seen considerable development, particularly in environmental systems. Republic cities on Luna imported large volumes of Earth soil and pioneered biot technologies to revitalize lunar regolith for supporting terrestrial plants, creating complex underground ecosystems that serve both practical and cultural functions. These advancements were paralleled on Mars and in other Solar colonies as a matter of survival but now serve colonists across human space.

A key republic innovation was Creche stations, specialized habitats providing long-term habitation for expectant mothers to ensure foetal development occurs within a standard Earth gravity. These stations were critical to populations on Luna, Mars, and other colonies during the initial exodus from earth but persistent microgravity conditions and limited access have now led to a emergence of the Low-G human phenotype.

Signature Technologies

  • Combat Frames: SR fielded the first advanced exoskeletons for military use, optimized for various combat environments and roles. SR Frames remain highly valued by combatants for their reliability and endurance.
  • Adaptive Modular Environmental Systems: SR scientists pioneered nearly every technology that underlies survival in the hostile environs of space and their ultimate expression of this is the AMES framework, a set of universal standards for the integration of key environmental systems, allowing for both easy repair and multi-layered redundancy in critical life support system.
  • Jumpsuits: Standard combat gear for crews of SR military ships, Jumpsuits are an evolution of g-suits used by early astronauts. Jumpsuits are built with integrated life support and resuscitation systems, IV plugs, and myofibre structures to compensate for various gravity conditions. A jumpsuit can monitor health, deliver meds, supplement circulation, and even circumvent damaged organs, making it possible for SR crew to endure both high and low gravity engagements.

Relations with Other Factions

Centauri Democratic Union: The Republic maintains neutral relations with the CDU and while periodic tensions flare around border disputes and ideological differences, a general begrudging acceptance of CDU independence is now the default. Within the military leadership the CDU's democratic system is viewed as inherently chaotic and vulnerable but preferrable to the fanaticism of the CSA. The Union's strategic control of valuable Altspace transit points remains a point of contention but not an insurmountable one.

Covenant of the Sacred Assembly: Relations with the Assembly range from cautious neutrality to outright hostility, with minimal diplomatic contact. The memory of CSA acts of terrorism during the Secession War has not faded even a century later, and while the leadership is cautious many SR soldiers are eager to test themselves against CSA zealots.

Lyran Stellar Confederation: The Republic views the Confederation with a mixture of dismissal and strategic interest. While considering the loose alliance militarily inferior, the Republic recognizes the value of LSC-controlled territories and resources, particularly as strategic buffers with the CDU and CSA. Relations remain generally neutral, with limited trade agreements and occasional joint operations against pirates.

Daedalus Swarm: Official Republic stance toward the Swarm emphasizes cautious isolation following the failed military action of 2208. However, significant factions within military leadership advocate for more aggressive study or even renewed confrontation, viewing the machine intelligences as both existential threat and potential technological goldmine.

Major Corporations: The Republic maintains complex relationships with corporations like Redrock Resources, Attar Technologies, and Aeon Dynamics. While officially maintaining authority over corporate activities within Republic territory, in practice, deep corporate integration into military supply chains and infrastructure creates significant leverage that often undermines military sovereignty.

Earth: The Republic is the primary steward of the Earth quarantine and orbital platforms monitoring the activity of both the Green and earthbound humanity. As the newly established first point of contact with the Ark cities many in the SR believe it may one day be possible not only to return to Earth but to bring its vast resources under SR control... if they can just find a way to deal with the Green.

Common Views on other Species

Humans: The backbone of the Republic. Valued for their adaptability and resilience. To many humans are the only "True" citizens of the Republic. Exalts: Respected, especially those with military enhancements. Seen as the next step in human evolution, but general distrust towards Exalts outside the military. Revs: Treated as property at best. Must have a human "owner" to have any rights. Useful for dangerous or specialized tasks, but not trusted with sensitive positions. Artilects: Strictly controlled and only allowed in specific, highly regulated roles, and otherwise outlawed. Deeply distrusted due to fears of rebellion or loss of human control. Asaps: Seen primarily as subjects of study at best and obstacles to settlement at worst. Asaps are given no rights within the SR. Some within the Republic espouse a desire to 'assimilate' useful Asaps while others push for relocation and isolation of Asap populations that impede SR expansion.

Strategic Interests

The Republic's primary strategic focus remains the security and stability of the Sol system, which it considers humanity's essential stronghold. Recent expansion to nearby star systems seeks to create defensive depth rather than imperial reach, establishing buffer zones against potential threats and securing resources necessary for sustained independence.

Internally, the Republic faces growing challenges from corporate influence that threatens to hollow out its sovereignty. Reform-minded officers, particularly within the Marshal-Errant corps, push for renewed commitment to founding principles of merit and service, while entrenched interests resist changes that might diminish their power or profits.

The long-term question facing the Republic is whether it can maintain its distinctive identity and independence as humanity spreads further into the stars, or whether it will gradually transform into a military façade concealing corporate control—a question that increasingly divides the officer corps and shapes internal politics.
